space clothes

After Elon Musk launched his Tesla Roadster into outer space this February, space travel seemed more attainable. Watching the ghost driver, Starman, hurtling into the galaxy with a cool David Bowie soundtrack and surrealistic selfie reel, made it seem as if we were watching an epic cinematic masterpiece rather than a real-life event.

As we get more comfortable with the idea of space travel to Mars and Pluto, Elon’s deep space agenda seems to continue to influence pop culture. So it comes as no surprise that fashion has taken the plunge, too.

Not only has deep space become the hot topic of conversation, but the space clothes trend has taken off, too.

How Do Fashion Trends Get Started, Anyway?

Although fashion trends arrive as quickly as they disappear, expressing your individuality with what you wear is here to stay. Not only do the styles we gravitate toward represent cultural statements, but they reflect social movements, too.

During the rebellious 1960s, art, politics, and the Civil Rights Movement became powerful fashion influencers. The younger generation embraced the new look that echoed their energy: psychedelic colors, bold mismatched patterns, and minimal structure.

Another social movement proved to be a heavy fashion influencer in the 1980s. As women rose to more prominent workplace roles in the corporate world, power suits with massive shoulder pads became a hugely popular trend.

As we ride the wave into the 21st Century, it appears that fashion has taken an anything goes approach.

Why The Futuristic Look is Trending

Perhaps it’s because of Elon Musk’s latest rocket launch. Or maybe it’s because we’ve witnessed a surge in technological advancements. Or we just might need something shiny to distract us from the negative political landscape that plagues planet Earth.

Glitter

Bid farewell to the muted looks from the past few years because glitter has arrived. The shimmery look was seen just about everywhere and featured rich fabrics with 3D-like effects.

Texture

This year’s look is all about shimmer, and gloss. From the patent-leather glossy shoes to the gem-encrusted jewelry, there was no shortage of shine. Clear plastic was also a playful texture interwoven throughout various types of clothing, shoes, and accessories.

Structure

A structured look was seen all over the runways and gave a controlled feeling to each designer’s look. Geometric cutouts in shoes, as well as stiff silhouettes, continued the space age theme. Hard angles and fitted foundations shared the stage with flowy, asymmetrical patterns.

Color Palate

Although silver, gold, and opalescent hues ruled the runway, neutral colors like black and white, mixed with a bright cobalt blue also stood out.

Runway Looks Launched For Spring and Summer

The space clothes look isn’t exactly new, but after a bit of a hiatus, it burst back onto the Fall 2017/Spring 2018 runways better than ever. Karl Lagerfeld’s dramatic Chanel runway backdrop, complete with a rumbling rocket, was one of the most memorable fashion shows around.
