You know what old adage needs to go? “Beauty is pain.” It’s 2019. It’s time to recognize that our inner and outer beauty doesn’t need to cause us pain. We can look and feel beautiful while feeling comfortable and happy in our own skin.

So that means no more short skirts and sheer tops when it’s below freezing outside. It means not sacrificing your toes to frostbite just to wear an open-toed shoe.

We understand that fashion is still important in the winter and that you probably don’t want to look like the kid from A Christmas Story who was so bundled up in layers that he could barely move.

So keep reading for 5 tips on cold weather outfits that will keep you looking cool without feeling cold.

1. Beanies Are Still in Style

While beanies might’ve reached their peak during the hipster craze of 2009, that doesn’t mean that they’re out of style. In fact, beanies are one of the most popular winter accessories that can make your outfit a bit more stylish while also keeping you that much warmer.

Did you know that we lose a lot of body heat through our heads? It’s because most people keep their head uncovered in the winter, which allows our heat to escape and our ears to feel frozen solid.

Don’t be afraid to add a beanie to your outfit to keep warm and stay cool all at once. Pair a slouchy beanie with skinny jeans and an oversized flannel if you’re going for a skater-barista vibe.

If you want to look a bit more professional for work or your style leans on the preppy side, you can find sleek, simple beanies that will work with almost any outfit.

2. Make Your Jacket Part of Your Outfit

It’s tempting to skip the jacket when you’ve got an amazing outfit on. Why would you want to cover up an awesome fit with a lumpy, boring, winter jacket?

Well, for starters, you’ll be freezing without a coat. But you’re also missing out on a whole different level of your outfit. A great coat can not only make an outfit better, but it can also be the center of the outfit itself.

Trench Coats

Trench coats are back in style in a big way. They’re also practical. The long length will keep more of your body covered and insulated, which will keep you warm.

If you find that the coat doesn’t give you enough shape, consider getting one that wraps or pair it with a belt. This will accentuate your waist and pull together the entire look.

Puffer Jackets

If you go for street style, grab a puffer jacket for this winter. They’re all over fashion week and huge brand names are jumping on the puffer bandwagon.

Pair these jackets with tight clothing items like leggings and tighter blouses to balance out the oversized puffiness of the jacket.

Faux Fur

It’s 2019. We’re past wearing dead animals on our bodies.

But that doesn’t mean “fur” doesn’t still look stylish, elegant, and expensive. Just opt for faux fur jacket options instead of the real stuff. Leopard print is back in, or you could go for jackets with faux fur trim on the hood and cuffs.

3. Layer Up

Definitely avoid the look from the early 2000s of wearing 4 different polos with popped collars (this look should never see the light of day again). However, layering as a concept is a great way to beef up your outfit and stay warm.

Try a simple tee paired with a button up blouse or cardigan to start. Then, pair with a knee-length skirt over tights and some thick or thermal socks (see more sock options for different shoes/outfits). Top this outfit off with a scarf, a hat, and a jacket.

Also, don’t forget about one of the most classic winter layer items available: turtlenecks. You can go with thick chunky ones paired with a vest, a skirt, and leggings. Or you could opt for a thinner one underneath a different chunky knit and corduroy pants.

These are just a few examples that show how many different layering options you have for winter outfit ideas!

4. Accessorize

We’ve mentioned a few accessories so far, but they’re key to keeping warm and stylish this winter. Beanies, other hats, scarves, earmuffs, socks, gloves, etc. Each of these items will keep you warm while also adding something special to each outfit.

Wearing an outfit filled with neutral colors? Consider throwing on a bright or patterned scarf.

Going for an 80s look? You can find so many 80s patterned sock options that will fit right under your winter boots.

Are the temperatures forcing you to break out your heavy-duty jacket? Up the style on no-so-stylish coats by throwing on a patterned or stylish belt.

5. Materials Matter

You can layer and accessorize with silk and thin cotton all day long, but those things won’t get you any warmer.

Switch your thin leggings for thick ones lined with flannels or shearling. Layer thin and sheer blouses with thick cardigans and lined jackets. Swap your thin summer socks for lined fuzzy ones.
