Are you having trouble adjusting your beauty routine as you age?

Inside, you still think of yourself as a 25-year-old. Someone who can experiment with bright eyeshadows and wild haircuts.

But when you see yourself in the mirror, you realize those looks don’t work like they used to.

Don’t despair! You can still look beautiful, feel confident, and have fun with your hair and makeup. All you have to do is make a few adjustments.

It just takes some new application techniques and trying tips for choosing the right styles and products. Soon you’ll look a little more to like the young woman you feel like inside.

The prime of your life is when you are at your most beautiful inside and out. Follow these simple beauty and makeup tips for older women and own it.

1. Keep Your Face Moisturized

As you age and your hormones change, your skin will naturally become drier than before.

To go on smoothly, makeup needs a moist canvas. If your skin is flaky, foundation and concealer will make it look worse.

Plus, if your skin is full of moisture, it will look more plump and youthful.

That’s why it’s important to do everything you can to inject some H2O into your skin. Start by drinking at least eight ounces of water daily and limiting dehydrating beverages like coffee and alcohol. Add a moisturizer and serum to your morning and evening skincare routine.

Then when it’s time to do your makeup, put on a hydrating face primer before your foundation. Your makeup will look smooth and dewy, and you’ll look younger.

2. Only Chop Your Locks if You Want To

Many women chop off their locks at a certain age as if it’s a rite of passage. For some, this is a great option.

With short hair, there’s much less maintenance. If you’re excited to get older and leave the 30-minute blow drying routine behind, go ahead and chop-chop!

But don’t do it because you think you have to. Mid to long hair lengths aren’t just for young women.

If longer hair makes you feel feminine and flirty, don’t let anyone pressure you into cutting it. You’ll have to adapt the way you cut and take care of your mane, but it’s easier than you think.

3. Don’t Cake-On Makeup

Now that your skin might show some age spots and discoloration, your first inclination might be to cake-on your makeup. But thick layers of foundation, concealer, and eyeshadow will only age you, not cover imperfections.

Caked-on makeup will settle into wrinkles and make them more pronounced.

For foundation, use something liquid-based with a moisturizing formula. This is the best style of product for mature skin. To cover dark circles, you can try a dab of concealer. But an even better idea is to deflect the discoloration with a liquid highlighter.

For eyeshadow, you don’t want to do the same heavy-handed looks of your youth. Your lids don’t have the elasticity that they used to, so colors won’t go on as smoothly as they did before.

Instead, your eyes will look heavy and tired.

Use a shadow primer on your eyes before applying color. This will keep shades from bleeding into one another. It will also allow the pigment to go on brighter so you don’t have to keep layering more product.

4. Avoid Crinkles with Eyeliners and Lipsticks

Speaking of eyes, don’t give up on eyeliner just because crepey skin makes it harder to get a straight line.

One option is to buy a soft, creamy eyeliner with a smudging tool on the other end of the stick. After applying, you can smudge away any imperfections for a smokey look.

If you love the polished look of a clean, straight line, try a different technique than pulling your eyelid taught. Instead, tilt your head up and half-close your lid so you can still see what you’re doing.

With a liquid liner, paint across your lash line with small strokes.

Similarly, mouth wrinkles can cause lipstick to create a crinkly, uneven line around your lips.

To manage this color bleed, use a lip liner. Then with a lipstick brush, apply light strokes of color. When you apply straight from the tube, the creamy color goes on too thick and gets caught in wrinkles.

5. Choose the Right Hair Color

When you see an older man with jet black hair, it looks unnatural and silly. When an older woman wears the wrong hair color it doesn’t look as bad… But it’s still not doing them any favors.

That’s why you should put some thought into the right hair color for you. One-dimensional hair looks obviously dyed on older women. You don’t have to have salt and pepper locks but consider some highlights or low-lights.

A good rule of thumb is to go with a base color that’s within a few shades of your real hair color. It will look more natural and subtle. A shock of bright red hair when you’re really a brunette will age you.

6. Plump Up Your Lashes

It’s natural that your lashes will start to thin out as you get older. To combat this, start using a lash growth serum. Even affordable drugstore brands can work wonders.

Apply a thin layer before bed every night, and you’ll start to see results in a couple weeks. Then, before you apply mascara, curl your lashes and brush them out. For stubborn lashes, heat the curler with a hair dryer for 2-4 seconds.
