Barbershop

By the time men hit 50, there’s an 85% chance that they’ve experienced significant hair loss. For most, the pathway to having thin hair in their 50’s means seeing gradual thinning as early as their mid-20’s.

For anyone that has experienced hair loss before, there’s no denying that it’s a scary process. Fortunately, just because your hair is thinner than it was in high school doesn’t mean that you can’t look fantastic!

In this post, our team shares what we feel are 9 of the best balding haircuts for men. We hope that by going through these suggestions and experimenting with a few, you’ll find the perfect cut for your unique sensibilities.

1. The Tight Buzz

Tight buzz cuts are when you take your hair clippers down to one or zero and do an even scrape around your scalp. This is great for people that have hair that’s noticeably thinning but still have an even spread of some hair around portions of their heads.

By taking your hair down to the nub, it’ll help your bald patches blend in with the areas you have hair, creating the illusion that if you wanted to grow out a full head of hair, you could.

2. Cleanly Shaven

For those of you macho men that feel good about fully embracing your bald, there’s no better balding haircut to pick from than the cleanly shaven look.

All you have to do to achieve the clean shave is pop into a barber and tell them to “take it all off”. This cut is best done with a straight razor and by somebody that has experience executing the bald look.

Another great advantage to this style is that many barbers couple a clean shave with a relaxing scalp massage!

3. Forward and Textured

If you men are experiencing some thinning in the front but still have hair to work at the back, the forward and textured look is for you. Try and grow your hair out to a medium/long length and then brush your fuller hair forward to fill in your thinning patches.

Your barber should be able to texture your hair with this look which will leave you with a messy, sexy, rock star appeal.

4. Tasteful Comb Over

Comb overs get a bad rap because some people that try them do so with too little hair. You’ll want to avoid a comb over if executing this look makes it obvious that you’re trying to hide your balding and the result doesn’t look good.

If, however, you have a noticeable amount of hair on one side of your head and some thinning on the other, combing the full side into the thin side will help your scalp look less bald.

5. A Short Mohawk

Not everyone has the vibe to pull off a mohawk. If you do, then running with this style can make it seem like those thin patches in your temple areas are bald by choice.

Rather than going with the classic, large, headbanger mohawk, we recommend shaving down the bald sides of your head and leaving a short strip of hair at the center of your scalp that runs from your forehead to your neck.

6. High, Skin-Tight Fade With a Short Top

Hair loss is common in men’s crown areas (the top and the back of one’s head). A great way to try and blend that thinning area is to take the sides of your head super short with your cut and gradually fade into having hair up top.

When you go to the barber, ask them for a high, skin-tight fade and they’ll be able to hook you up with this look.

Note that fades can be hard to execute so find a barber that’s skilled in pulling them off.

7. The Natural

This haircut is not for the faint of heart. It makes the men embrace the fact that the sides of their head grow out long but the top doesn’t. Think Larry David.

To pull this style off, you’ll want your barber to keep your sides well-trimmed. For the top, you can either opt to semi-blend your thinning upper hair with your fuller side hair or shave the top of your head altogether.

8. Slick Back

Receding hairlines can be largely covered by having your barber cut your hair in such a way that it slicks back easily. In addition to making your hairline seem fuller, the slick back style has the bonus of covering up thinning at your crown.

Since this style can be gel intensive, depending on your hair type, try and opt for a natural, medium-hold gel as using a lot of ultra-hold products in your hair could contribute to your hair loss.

If you find that your slick back look doesn’t cover up your balding crown enough, you could consider SMP which you can check out more about online.

9. Grown out and Messy

The eccentric grown out and messy look lets you cover up your baldness by embracing volume. All you have to do to own this “do” is let your hair grow, trim its ends to keep it relatively healthy, and let it hang everywhere.
