Top Tips for Picking a Great Outfit for Working Out

Here’s how to put together a gym outfit that makes you look and feel your best.

Tops

There are lots of different types of tops you can wear to the gym.

Crop tops are perfect because they show off your abs, arms, and butt. Pair them with some high-waisted leggings to make your legs look longer. This will really compliment your curves!

Tank tops are great, too. They tend to look better when they’re worn with shorts, as this provides a more balanced look.

To show off your shoulders and back, go for racer-back cuts. This shape is always flattering.

You can wear plain old t-shirts, too. To dress them up a little bit, you could tie them in a knot at the bottom.

You could also inject some humor into your outfit by wearing gym tops with funny phrases printed on them, like ‘running late is my cardio’, ‘gym and tonic’, or ‘thick thighs save lives’. Plenty of athleisure wear brands offer shirts like these.

Leggings

Leggings should be a staple in your workout wardrobe.

They show off your curves, making your figure look great. They’re also super comfortable! You don’t have to worry about your thighs chaffing while you’re on the treadmill when you’re wearing these.

You can’t go wrong with a pair of classic black leggings. However, the shape and length of them will change the way they compliment your figure.

Leggings with a V-shaped waistline will streamline your hips and draw your waist in to make it appear smaller. Three-quarter-length or Capri leggings will make your calves look more defined, and full-length ones will make your legs look longer.

Some pairs also have mesh panels, will show some extra skin while providing a bit of ventilation.

There are hundreds of different colors and designs to choose from, so get creative and choose whatever you like. Just don’t go for gray ones! They look cute until you start to get crotch sweat. Then, it all gets rather embarrassing.

Shorts

You can’t always wear leggings, so switch it up from time to time by wearing shorts when you work out.

The most popular variety is booty shorts, which are made from the same skin-tight material as leggings. These can be super comfortable, but you have to be wary of them riding up when you do certain exercises.

You can also wear running shorts, which usually have undershorts inside them. These are great because they still create a flattering shape without risking any accidental slippage.

Avoid over-sized shorts, like the ones you might usually wear for basketball or football. They’re completely unflattering and tend to make you look frumpy.

Sports Bras

A sports bra is the most important part of any woman’s gym outfit.

Unlike normal bras, you don’t have to worry about them showing or peeking out from under your clothes. In fact, you can show them off as much as you like. You can do this by layering them under tops with open sides or racer backs.

If you’re comfortable going without a shirt and working out in just your sports bra, go for it. It’s a great look!

For an extra stylish workout look, choose sports bras that have multiple criss-cross straps at the back, or colorful graphic designs.

Footwear

You can’t have a great gym outfit without a nice pair of shoes.

Throw out your dirty old sneakers and invest in a new pair of training shoes. Whether you prefer CrossFit shoes, hi-tops, running shoes or pumps, they need to be clean and in good condition. Otherwise, they’ll throw your whole outfit off.

Hairstyles

No matter how tempting it is to wear your hair down to the gym, don’t do it. As soon as you start working out, it will become a sweaty mess. It will stick to your face and neck, and start to annoy you pretty quickly.

Instead, play around with some up-do workout hairstyles.

A high ponytail always works. If you’d rather have your hair completely out of the way, you could put it in a bun, too.

However, braids are by far the best type of hairstyle for the gym. They keep your back while still looking beautiful, and allow you to use some creativity, too. There are lots of different ways to braid your hair, including boxer braids, French braids, Dutch braids goddess braids.

When you’re choosing the right underwear to workout in, try to go for ones that won’t look obvious under your shorts or leggings.

If you want to go the extra mile, you can also buy some shapewear to put on under your workout clothes. These conceal problem areas and enhance your shape by tucking and smoothing your tummy, hips, and thighs.

You can’t wear jewelry to the gym, it’s just not practical.

However, that doesn’t mean you can accessorize. There are plenty of ways to add some extra flair to your gym outfit. For example, you could express yourself with a decorative water bottle, some knee-high socks, or even a fancy sports watch.

You could finish it all off with a trendy workout bag to keep all your kit together.
