Scarlett Johansson has it. So do Lady Gaga, Meghan Markle, and pretty much anyone who is a celebrity.

We’re talking about style, which is something that can elude a lot of people. When you consider that at least half of the clothing in closets worldwide are never worn, perhaps a lack of knowing one’s personal style is to blame?

Developing your own personal style means never having to say “meh” while looking at your wardrobe ever again. If you’d like to find your own personal style and the type of apparel that resonates with you, read on for five tips.

1. Notice Who Inspires You

Maybe you admire a particular celeb’s ensemble each time you see them on the red carpet, or perhaps you follow a fashion blogger. Start a Pinterest board (or two or three) dedicated to these folks and to start saving looks you’re fond of.

Magazines are another great source of inspiration. You can start a vision board of fashion items and looks you love comprised of fashion magazine clippings.

Keep in mind that age doesn’t dictate whether a particular look can work for you. Women who are old enough that they have tried anti-aging cream can still rock a miniskirt and teach you a lot about personal style.

2. Declutter Your Closet

Now is a good time to clean out your closet by separating any articles of clothing you’ve never worn, only wore once, or don’t plan to wear. Recycle, sell, or give them away. The same goes for footwear and accessories.

Think of this step as starting with a clean slate towards stocking your closet with a wardrobe you truly love.

3. Experiment in the Dressing Room

Visit some stores with the intention of trying on different fashion pieces that pique your interest. Don’t worry about actually buying anything on this trip, unless you fall in love with something. This is about having fun and seeing how different fabrics and styles feel on you.

This is also an opportunity to break out of your comfort zone and try on something you never would have considered before. You never know; something a bit unusual may just become your favorite wardrobe staple.

4. Keep Comfort in Mind

No matter how beautifully made or glamorous a piece of clothing is, you’ll never wear it unless you feel good in it. That applies to not just how it makes you feel, but how it feels against your skin.

Whatever your new look is, it should always be comprised of clothing that is comfortable to wear. You don’t want to fall into the old trap of buying clothes that will never come off the hanger.

When you are ready to start purchasing pieces that reflect your new style, ask yourself where and how often you’ll wear them. Pay attention to how they fit and feel. You want to get your money’s worth and keep them around for at least a few seasons, if not for a lifetime.

5. Don’t Overlook Accessories

Accessories are part of your revamped personal style as well. The right hat, scarf, sunglasses, or necklace can add a touch of extra personality or bring an entire look together. And don’t forget that new footwear can be part of reinventing your look!
