We get it, you’ve been in a long term relationship with your shampoo brand, but things aren’t what they used to be.

You love the way it smells and you used to love the way it made your hair look and feel—until recently. Is it time to throw in the towel?

In this article, we’re uncovering all the telltale signs that you need to switch up your shampoo brands.

We’re not suggesting you run out and buy the world’s most expensive shampoo (unless you have a spare $300 lying around) but knowing what symptoms you’re experiencing will lead you to find a better shampoo for your hair and your scalp.

Grab your shampoo bottle and magnifying glass, we’re launching an official investigation into your shampoo’s ulterior motives.

You Need to Switch Shampoo Brands If…

If you’re experiencing one or more of these hair red flags, then consider switching up your suds. If Jennifer Aniston got over Brad Pitt, then you can get over your shampoo brand.

Keep reading to find out if you’re shampoo is the reason for your dull or dying locks.

Your Hair Is Thinning

The sad fact is that about 40% of women deal with hair thinning or visible hair loss by age 40. The truth is, this doesn’t just apply to middle-aged women but can affect anyone at any age and gender.

If you have thin hair or are experiencing thinning, there’s something you can do about it. The first place to start is by switching your shampoo. You need something that isn’t just volumizing but something that will strengthen your follicles and encourage them to grow.

When choosing a new shampoo and conditioner, look for ingredients like amino acids, ginseng, and biotin, and peppermint oil that will thicken and strengthen your hair. Do your best to avoid things like synthetic preservatives, parabens, and artificial fragrances.

You Have Split Ends for Days

Your shampoo should always be helping your hair, not hurting it. If you’re experiencing breakage–even if you take care of it (i.e. always using heat protecting products and getting regular trims)–it could mean it’s a shampoo problem.

A big cause for breakage is hair that is too dry. Ensure your shampoo is providing your locks with plenty of hydration and avoid ones that strip (aka clarifying shampoos). Look for ingredients like shea butter, aloe, and Vitamin E to make certain your hair is soaking up all the moisture it needs.

Grabbing a hair masque or a heavy duty deep conditioner wouldn’t be a bad idea to add to your hair routine. Do your best to avoid the sun and give your hair a break (pun not intended) from hot styling tools.

Your Hair Is Greasier Than a $1 Slice of Pizza

Regardless of how often you wash it, your hair is oily–all the time. We’ve been there. It’s embarrassing but it’s most likely not your problem. You’ll be happy to know that you can blame it all on your shampoo.

If you’re desperate to get rid of that awful greasy sheen, then look for a clarifying shampoo that will strip your hair of product buildup without moisture. The best products are ones that reduce excess sebum secretion which is the culprit of an oily scalp. You might also want to grab a quality dry-shampoo for some extra help between shampoos.

Keep an eye out for dandruff, that also might be the cause for your excess oil problem. If you’re experiencing flaking an dry scalp, try some natural over the counter products like creams and dandruff shampoos.

If your dandruff persists, you may want to consult your doctor as they can provide you with a stronger prescription shampoo that will keep your scalp and hair oil-free.

Your Color Fades Quickly

If you’re one of those girls who changes their hair color with the season, then you’re just like us. Unfortunately, our shampoo and conditioner brands aren’t always able to keep up with our new and vibrant shades.

We know (and often ignore) how damaging color and bleach can be to our hair so we have to work twice as hard to keep it healthy. This means switching up our hair care products to something more moisturizing and color-protecting.

Ingredients to look for is just as important as ingredients to avoid. Things like sulfate and silicone can damage treated hair whereas natural organic oils and vitamins can protect it.

Your Hair Is Frizzier Than Normal

Our hair can change over time (especially with a change in locations or climates). This may mean you need to change your shampoos.

If you’re experiencing frizz or overall dryness consider a lightweight moisturizing shampoo. Often we reach for a heavy duty moisturizing conditioner when we feel our locks getting dry. Unfortunately, this can weigh our hair down as well as increase the flexibility in the follicles which can lead to breakage.

Aim for a shampoo with ingredients like coconut extract or Moroccan argan oil. These oils are lightweight. They keep moisture in and humidity out, therefore taking care of your frizz problem.
