How to Play Pickleball

Life can get you to be really boring and unhealthy. Most people go to work, sit down all day, come home, and do the same thing.

This not the way we should be living. Instead, we should be looking to find more innovative ways to get people active. One way to do this is through playing Pickleball.

Originally coming from a makeshift game that the late congressman Joel Pritchard of Washington created with a few of his friends, Pickleball has grown into a great game to play especially for older adults.

If you’re trying to get more active and looking for a new game to play, here are the basic rules of the game so that you can become a Pickleball enthusiast too.

Rules of the Game

The rules are fairly simple, and they come from a mix of Tennis, Badminton, and Ping Pong rules as well as ones unique to the game.

The Court

Pickleball is played on a court similar to a badminton one, with a dimension of 20 by 44 feet divided into two opposing sides. Each side has a serving square and a 7-foot  ‘kitchen’, otherwise known as the No Volley Zone.

The first team to eleven points or with two points ahead wins the game.

The Serve

In Pickleball, serves are made diagonally like Tennis, and they alternate sides. However, the serves must be done underhand, preferably below the waist. Also like Tennis, the one serving must be behind the backline.

The ball must be hit diagonally and clear the kitchen for it to count.

How Volleys Work

To volley the ball is to hit it without allowing it to have a bounce. This is only possible when you are behind the No Volley Zone lines. It is considered a fault if the player goes over these lines in any way during his followthrough.

What’s the Double Bounce Rule?

The Double Bounce Rule (you might also hear the Two Bounce Rule) is that every person (if playing singles) or team’s (if playing doubles) first hit must be played off the bounce.

The receiving team of a serve must let the ball bounce first before hitting it, and likewise for the serving team when the ball is returned. Only after the double bounce has been completed can the teams volley the ball.

It is a great way to build stamina and agility while having fun.
