Is your New Year’s resolution to get yourself into great shape?

But by the time you get to the end of your first week back in the gym, you’re going to start to lose some of the motivation to work out. And by the time you make it to the one-month point, there’s a good chance you’re going to despise the idea of going to the gym.

1. Create a Clear List of Fitness Goals

Before you can start working towards fitness goals, you need to take some time to figure out what you want those goals to be.

Maybe you want to lose 25 pounds by the time next summer rolls around. Or maybe you want to be able to bench press 225 pounds within the next few months.

Whatever the case may be, you need to have clearly-defined goals that you can work towards in the new year. Otherwise, you’re going to find it easy to make excuses for why you can’t go to the gym.

2. Find the Right Fitness Program

Do you absolutely hate the idea of spending more than two minutes running? Then don’t try to trick your brain into thinking that you’re going to become a marathon runner this winter. You’re not going to have the motivation to work out when you’re doing workouts that you hate.

3. Invite Your Partner to Tag Along With You

One of the best ways to keep your motivation levels high when it comes to working out is finding someone to work out with you. If you have a spouse or a boyfriend or girlfriend, consider asking them to commit to working out with you.

There are many advantages that you’ll enjoy when your partner agrees to be your workout buddy. Here are just a few:

  • You’ll be held accountable when you decide to skip a workout
  • You’ll work harder to hit your goals when you know someone is watching you in the gym
  • You’ll get the chance to spend more time with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend

4. Hire a Personal Trainer to Help You

Are you having a tough time tracking down a workout buddy? No worries! There is another option for you.

You can hire a personal trainer to be your workout buddy when you visit the gym. They’ll be able to take a look at your fitness goals and help you reach them in no time.

Personal trainers can also make sure you’re staying safe in the gym. They’ll prevent you from trying to do too much too quickly and show you the right way to do certain exercises so that you don’t hurt yourself.

5. Consider Taking a Fitness Class (or Two!)

Not everyone can afford to hire a personal trainer to work out with them. If that’s the case for you, there is yet another way that you can surround yourself with motivation when you’re in the gym.

You can sign up for a fitness class (or two!) and take part in different workouts with other people who are committed to getting into better shape. It’ll allow you to make new friends while hitting the fitness goals that you have set for yourself.

6. Put Together a Killer Workout Playlist

When you start working out, you’re going to need to create a workout playlist for yourself. You can jampack it with all of your favorite songs as well as some high-energy songs that will give you tons of motivation when you’re in the gym.

Additionally, you should switch up your playlist every few weeks so that the songs on it don’t get stale. It’ll fill you with energy when you’re in the gym and give you every incentive to go after your goals.

7. Reward Yourself Once You Start Hitting Your Goals

If you’re able to stick with your new workout regimen long enough to hit the fitness goals you set for yourself, you deserve a reward! Don’t be afraid to celebrate your accomplishments.

If you’re able to lose 10 pounds in the first month of working out, treat yourself to a “cheat day” filled with pizza, ice cream, and whatever else your heart desires. If you’re able to increase your bench press by 20 pounds within a couple months, replace a regular workout day with a trip to the movies.
