What Is Authentic Scottish Tartan?
To identify an authentic tartan, look for lines that are repeated over and over across both the vertical and horizontal direction of the fabric. In fact, you can often find a square around 6 inches that’s used as the base of the pattern. This is called the sett and it’s replicated many times across the fabric.
But the biggest identifying feature of tartan is its importance in Scottish culture. A tartan is associated with a Scottish family, community, or clan, and to be a true tartan it has to be officially recognized by Scotland. Interesting stuff!
What’s the Difference Between Tartan and Plaid?
Plaid and tartan often look the same and are made up of the same pattern idea. But plaid fabrics are the patterns that haven’t been officially recognized as a tartan by Scotland. So, even though they may look almost exactly the same, tartan is registered and plaid isn’t.
In a way, all tartans are also plaids as that is the pattern. But if tartan is recognized as one, you should really always call it a tartan.
But plaids can also have a slightly different pattern to tartan. Chequered fabrics can also be plaids. Unlike tartan, these are usually made up of only two colors and don’t follow quite the same style as tartan.
Plaid also has another meaning to confuse matters more! In modern Scotland, plaid refers to a rectangular piece of tartan fabric that’s draped over the left shoulder when worn as is used as part of traditional Highland dress.
