We have put together this short guide to share the top fisherman sweaters for men and women.

Sorrel Aran Sweater

This is a long sleeve crew neck sweater that is cropped. It has side slits and a traditional Aran pattern. The materials consist of silk, wool, cashmere, and cotton.

Because of the delicate materials, you only want to hand wash this sweater with lukewarm water and never put it in the dryer because it will ruin it. It is best to lay it flat to dry and take the time to reshape it while it is damp.

We recommend looking at these gorgeous sweaters from Ireland because the company is reputable and has been around since 1988. The yarn used for each sweater is 100% natural and each piece is finished by hand.

Mens Aran Half Zip

This is a trendy and popular option for men. It is made with 100% Soft Merino Wool. If you live in an area with cooler winters, then this sweater will keep you warm and cozy.

It can be paired with either slacks for work or jeans for a more casual look. Just like other wool materials, you want to handwash it (preferably with a mild wool detergent). The key is to not let the piece of clothing soak for too long because the wool can become hard and shrink.

Where Did They Come From?

Many people do not realize that originally these sweaters originated in the Aran Islands, which are off the coast of Ireland. In the 20th century, fishermen and their wives that were coming from other parts of the British Isles to teach better fishing techniques originally crafted the sweater.

In order to adapt to the harsh island conditions on Aran, the wives began knitting sweaters with unscoured and thicker wool. This made the sweaters not as soft, but made them water-resistant because of the lanolin. Lanolin are natural oils that are left in the wool because of the lack of scouring.
