fall fashion trends

Fall is just around the corner, so it’s time to start investigating the latest fashion trends and seeing what you may need to add to your wardrobe. You want to be ready for pumpkin lattes and cooler weather, and you want to make sure you have the latest items to stay au courant.

The 80s continue to dominate the fashion ethos this season. This is a continuation of last year’s trends, so you may still get away with some of 2017’s fun fashion purchases. You may even be able to resurrect some items from your mother’s (or your own!) closet.

Here is a list of the top fall fashion trends for 2018.

1. Leather

The 80s are still hot, and nowhere is it more obvious that the explosion of leather on the runways. Designers showed black leather jackets on the runways with the same shoulder pads and metal studs that made such an impression on Pat Benatar and Joan Jett back in the day.

With a chunky scarf and a pair of skinny jeans, a leather bomber or motorcycle jacket makes a dramatic statement for day or evening.

You can also rock leather with skirts and dresses, which hug the body in a genuinely animalistic fashion.

2. Fringe

Western wear seems to have carried over from last year as well, with cowboy boots and fringe seen on the street and in the designer shows. Long fringe is being featured on cuffs, collars, and sleeves, and edging the ubiquitous neck scarf.

Fall brings more warm and woolly styles. Fringe on a long sweater coat or kilt can enhance an autumn outfit, bringing to mind cuddling under cozy horsehair blankets with cocoa in front of the fire.

3. Space Age

Whether it is the David Bowie show at the Brooklyn Museum or the proposed new national space force, everyone seems to be thinking intergalactic. Space age fashion is all the rage, and there are numerous ways you can achieve this cool effect.

Metallic fabrics look awesome for jeans and glittery tops. Silver boots continue to fly off the shelves. Even makeup has a cosmic tint, with sparkles available for lips, eyes, and hair.

4. Neon Colors

More 80s style keeps coming back, in this case with the blindingly bright palette of electric pinks, greens, and yellows. These look awesome when they accentuate a little black dress, or in evening wear when you are ready to hit the clubs.

If you would rather be more subtle with your neons, try the pop of color which comes with a fun little Kate Spade bag or some hot pink stilettos under your long dress.

5. Bulky Layers

One new trend many designers seemed to advocate this season was the look of layers. Models kept piling them on. You too can now look chic wearing puffy vests over a chunky sweater and a long flowing skirt.

This style is perfect for the season’s changeable weather- you can add a jacket as the sun goes down and the temperature drops. You can remove your ethnic shawl if the party gets hot.

Many women like the ability to cover up, for more reasons than one. If you don’t feel like wearing Spanx one day, the bulky layered look can disguise any body parts you do not feel like flaunting.

6. Ethnic Patterns

In a throwback to Yves Saint Laurent’s 70s fashions, fall fashion is highlighting ethnic prints and textures. You will see bold, bright colors which recall the tribal fabrics of far-off regions like Afghanistan and Mongolia.

Mixing and matching patterns continue to be popular. No one worries about clashing anymore!

However, if you are going to opt for a brightly colored mix of ethnic textiles, you may choose to tone down the rest of the accessories and jewelry. Let the clothes speak for themselves.

7. Flower Appliques

Flowered prints and appliques were a surprise new style featured by many of the top designers in Paris for the fall collections. The floral look accentuates your femininity.

The appliques themselves, often complex works of art in sequins and beads, often display incredible workmanship and detail. Influenced by bridal fashion, now flowers are peeking out from bodices, skirts, and headwear on all occasions for delicate, natural air.

8. Masculine Overcoats

One of the most apparent trends on the fall fashion runways this season was the manly overcoat. Designers like Calvin Klein and Chloe showed a range of takes on the classic trench, in everything from vinyl to traditional herringbone tweed.

Long slim coats look sleek over pants or skirts and can be dressed up with accessories like a colorful scarf or some thigh high boots.

If you are worried about overspending your budget on a designer coat, never fear. There are some amazing websites out there where you can score the latest in the top fashion trends.

9. Faux Fur

Faux fur was everywhere this spring and keeps popping up in the stores. These environmentally-friendly styles allow you to have the luxurious softness and warmth of real fur without hurting your beloved animals.

Faux fur also easily translates into funky fashion, as it looks great dyed in any color of the rainbow. Go sparingly- like with a furry collar and cuffs. Or go all out, with a pink mohair maxi coat!

10. Logos

Huge brands names have always been famous in street fashion, and now the designers themselves are displaying their names. Ironic or not, you need a purse with a gigantic YSL or Louis Vuitton symbol.

Whether it’s plastered across the waistband of your underwear peeking out of your pants or emblazoned across your chest, sing your pride in your designer duds out loud.
