“New year, new me” is a phrase often heard at the end of each year or as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the beginning of another trip around the sun. What does this saying even mean?

For some people, it may mean weight loss, quitting a bad habit, waking up on time, or going to church. For others, this phrase might mean trying to be a better person.

Many people don’t consider it to include their mental health, but they should! We’re going to take a look at New Years resolutions that incorporate mental health and being your best self. Keep reading for more information!

Learn to Meditate

When most people think of meditation, they imagine monks chanting or extended periods of sitting quietly. Although these are both ways to meditate, there are other ways to practice mindfulness.

It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to wake up one morning and sit quietly for an hour. Instead, try listening to guided meditations that can be found on various media sites. These range from three minutes to fifteen or longer.

Gradually build up to a comfortable timeframe and begin witnessing the benefits in your daily life.

Talk With a Professional

Your friends might be an amazing source of support, but they are often biased and can sometimes encourage bad habits. Choosing to work with a professional counselor can allow you to explore any mental health, anger, or relational issues in your life.

You may have to meet with a few Denver Therapists before finding the right one — but committing to having a great working relationship will allow you to reap many rewards.

Set Goals Then Rest

Some weeks you may feel incredibly overwhelmed and unsure of how you’re going to accomplish all of your tasks. The best way to do this is to set small, incremental goals.

Once you meet several of these goals, give yourself permission to rest. Take a day off and allow yourself to be lazy, nap, and stay in pajamas.

Allowing yourself a day to recuperate after a stressful week or month will do wonders for your mental health. You will also find that after some rest, you are energized and ready to take on the rest of your goals.

Give Back

Donating money to your chosen cause can give you a warm and fuzzy feeling for a few minutes. Giving your time will make you feel accomplished and like you physically made a difference.

It can be difficult to donate an entire day to a particular cause, but you may be able to put specific skills to good use while you work your day job.

No Negative Self Talk

This new years resolution is simple, takes very little effort, minimal time, and no money. Each time you find yourself saying something negative, correct it, and say something positive

There are numerous studies available that concur with the statement, ‘the more you hear something, the more you believe it.’ This includes positive and negative reinforcements, so tell yourself something great!

Make a Mental Health New Years Resolutions

Most people forget their New Years resolutions by the second week of January. It can be difficult to force yourself into doing something if you don’t directly see benefits.
