Yoga originated 5,000 years ago in India. Over 37 million Americans participate in the practice today.

Yoga is a mind-body workout consisting of stretching and body poses. There are different types of yoga, from mild to vigorous.

Yoga provides a great workout and strengthens both your body and mind. Yoga is so popular, you can find classes at your local gym. Or look for a dedicated yoga studio.

Are you thinking about trying yoga? If so, make sure you’re wearing the right type of clothing.

Take a look at these five tips for what to wear to yoga classes.

Ladies, Pick the Right Bra

Yoga is low impact. But you’ll engage in vigorous movement. As with any physically-demanding sport, wear a good sports bra.

You want good support and coverage when you’re moving from one position to another. It’s possible you’ll even be upside down, so a good-fitting bra is crucial.

If you sweat a lot, you’ll appreciate the wicking material of a good sports bra.

Watch Your Top

For men and women, a close-fitting top is a must. You don’t want anything binding, but loose-fitting t-shirts are a no-no. If you’re in the Downward-Dog position, a loose-fitting shirt will fall down over your head!

There’s lots of twisting and stretching in yoga. The best types of tops are long and fitted. Opt for a top that stays put no matter what position you’re in. Don’t wear anything super low-cut or revealing.

Stick with darker colors too, especially in hot yoga. Remember, it’s not a wet t-shirt contest.

Yoga Pants

You’re heading to your first ever yoga class and didn’t have time to go shopping. Don’t grab any old pair of leggings in the drawer. Regular leggings aren’t always thick enough.

If you don’t have yoga pants, substitute a good pair of workout pants. The stretching and yoga positions are extreme. If your leggings are old and thin, the person behind you might be getting a show.

Double check the crotch area for holes! Most people go commando in yoga pants. They’re thick and wick away moisture. Adding underwear is a moisture trap. If you don’t like going underwear-free, get some moisture-wicking underwear.

Express Yourself

It’s important to wear the right clothes to yoga class. But that doesn’t mean sacrificing your style! It’s okay to wear earrings and other jewelry, as long as it doesn’t get in your way.

Bracelets are fine, but make sure they don’t interfere with your hands. Wrist malas are great for yoga class. And if you’re a prayer warrior, you’ll love them for counting your mantras.

Avoid Shorts

Shorts are a big no-no for yoga class. Save them for your regular gym sweat sesh. You want your bottom and legs covered while practicing yoga.

If you wear shorts, you’ll spend the whole class pulling them down and worrying about who can see what. Don’t wear them.

What to Wear to Yoga Class

Now that you know what to wear to yoga class, you’re ready for your first sweat session. Wear a good-fitting sports bra. Avoid loose tops and t-shirts. Use yoga pants. And avoid shorts at all costs!
