As we become more aware of our impact on the planet, it makes sense to want to make sustainable changes wherever possible. But have you ever thought about it in your beauty routine? More specifically, your grooming?

An estimated two billion razors are produced in the US each year. Each one contributing to the landfill crisis. But what if you could stop being one of those billions?

There are many ways to go about hair removal sustainably, but our favorite is laser hair removal. Semi-permanent, advanced, popular… so say goodbye to razor burn and hello to laser hair removal benefits.

Laser Hair Removal Benefits

Laser hair removal is the semi-permanent process of using laser technology to detect hair on the leg and damage the follicle. The laser can detect the hair by pigment. The laser senses the darker or differing pigment and then lasers that specific area damaging the follicle.

Like any form of hair removal, there are ups… and then there’s downs. Let’s see the pros and cons of laser hair removal and see if it’s a sustainable choice for you.

To Laser or Not to Laser

Before we get started on the pros and cons, don’t worry. The word laser can sound intimidating but as long as you’re seeing a certified professional, this is a safe procedure.

Pros

The first obvious pro is that it’s semi-permanent. So, while no, your hair isn’t gone forever, it can reduce the thickness, regrowth time, and amount of hair growth altogether.

Another major benefit is the reduced irritation. Most women suffer from uncomfortable razor burn and ingrown hairs, but laser hair removal takes that all away. After a session, a small amount of irritation may occur at the damaged follicle, but after 1-3 days you’ll be good as new!

And finally, you can do it anywhere! Upper lip, chest, underarms, legs, bikini, literally anywhere you want hair gone, you can do that with this treatment. While body hair should not define our confidence, we’re human, and we have insecurities – and that’s okay. Laser hair removal is a choice for yourself and what makes you feel best.

Cons

This treatment is not for the impatient. Depending on the size of the area, and thickness of hair, it can take up to 6 to 8 treatments, and often 6 weeks between each treatment. So, you can expect up to a year (or more) of sessions before you reach the full extent of hairlessness.

Yeah, speaking of those 6 to 8 treatments. You have to pay for those as well. It can range anywhere from $200 to $900 a session, depending on the area and company.

Compared to how much you spend in a lifetime on razors (and pink tax), it equals out. But, it can feel like a lot upfront! On the plus side, some health insurance providers will help split the difference, so don’t let prices stop you.

Because of the technology, laser hair removal isn’t as successful on darker skin tones. The technology works by on seeking out the darker pigment of the hair, as it contrasts against the lighter skin. When there’s no contrast between hair and skin, the laser cannot find the specific area to damage.

This doesn’t mean there’s no option for darker skin tones though. There are specific lasers that fix this issue so before settling on a treatment center, make sure they have the correct laser.
