hairstyles for little girls

Having a little girl is one of the best things about being a parent. Buying cute, little clothes, decorating their room, and styling their hair are just a few favorites among moms worldwide.

We know it seems more glamorous than it is, though – a busy morning means rushing to get them off to school and yourself ready to face the day while still making you both look good. It sounds much easier than it is most of the time.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of 10 easy and adorable hairstyles for little girls you’ll both love. Check them out below!

1. French Braid

Suitable for every occasion, french braids look stylish and are easy to accomplish in just a few minutes. First, brush through the hair until all knots and tangles are gone. Next, gather the hair from the top of the head and divide it into three sections.

Taking the hair from one side, move it over the middle section. Repeat this action with the other side. To make sure the sections don’t come undone, pull them tight.

As you move through the sections, add more hair of equal amounts before you repeat the crossover motion each time. Continue this motion until you reach the bottom of each section and secure with an elastic band.

2. Waterfall Twist

A popular hairstyle among all ages of girls, this style looks effortless and cute at the same time. Start by taking a piece of hair from above the ear and divide it into two halves. Moving horizontally, twist the hair one over the other.

Next, you’ll take another section of hair that falls downwards and place it between the two twisting sections, forming another twist around it. This will create the “waterfall” chucks and should continue to fall downwards in noticeable locks.

Continue this around the head until you reach above the other ear. Once there, push a bobby pin into the twist to hold everything in place. Tuck the remaining hair down so that it blends with the rest of the “waterfall”.

3. Fishtail Braid

The fishtail braid is another popular hairstyle that is unique, stylish, and easy to do. After running a brush or comb through the hair, make a ponytail by tying a ribbon at the base of the neck. Divide the ponytail into two even parts.

Using your finger, separate a small section of hair from the outer edge and bring it over to the opposite side, making sure to overlap the rest of the hair. Repeat this on the opposite side.

Continue this action, alternating sides, for the rest of the length of hair; using an elastic band, tie the hair at the end. Once the hair is tied, remove the ribbon from the base of the neck. If desired, loosen the braid by gently pulling the sides.

4. Bow Bun

A newer style, the bow bun is extremely adorable and works for fun occasions. Start by gathering up the hair from the top to make a high ponytail and secure with an elastic band. Loop the hair through the elastic without pulling it all the way through.

Next, create a loop leaving the loose ends falling on the forehead and divide the loop into two. Gathering the ends, fold them into the space between the two halves. This will create the center knot of the bow.

Using another elastic band, secure the loose ends behind the bow. If you want to create a “puff” effect in the bow, gently pull the strands of hair by tugging them tighter.

5. Chignon Hair Bun

A more formal do, the chignon hair bun looks elegant while staying simple and easy to do. Begin by brushing the hair and gathering it into a low ponytail. Using your fingers, create a small opening above the ponytail and pull the ponytail through the opening.

Using the same loop, pick the ponytail and loop it through again; secure with bobby pins. Use hairspray or styling gel to keep flyaways at bay. If desired, you can even add flowers or a headwrap like Stevie J’s to make the hairstyle less formal.

6. Halo Braid

Perfect for any little angel, the halo braid is suitable for any face shape and is great for a variety of outings. Start this hairdo by creating a side part and pulling a thick section of hair to one side. Separate this piece into three strands.

Begin weaving the section by crossing each strand over the middle strand. Make sure to pull the hair strands tight to ensure the braid stays tight. Continue braiding along the hairline, moving towards the ear.

As you continue braiding, pull new strands of hair from each side and bring it down towards the bottom of the braid. Once finished, apply some hairspray to any loose strands.

7. Side Lace Braid

Another braid simple, perfect for any occasion, and great for keeping bangs out of your little one’s face is the side lace braid. For this hairstyle, you’ll need to straighten the hair before beginning the braid.

Once straightened, part the hair into two sections and make a typical french braid on one side. Avoiding the bottom of the hair, pick hair from the top.

Using little strands of hair from the front side, add it to the braid, keeping it to one side. Pull out the braid sections a bit and secure the ends with a hair tie.

8. The Hair Bow (Feeling Knotty)

One of the easiest hairstyles on this list, the hair bow adds a touch of style in other words plain hairdo. Begin by taking a small section of hair – about 1.5″ – from both sides.

Pull the strands of hair back and cross them. Tie a bow by pulling tightly and securing with bobby pins.

9. Heart Braid

Adding a heart as an accessory to any hairstyle is bound to create something adorable. Creating a hairstyle into a heart is taking it one step further. We recommend using a broad hairbrush and tail comb to make this hairstyle work best.

Begin by brushing the hair to get rid of any tangles. Using a tail comb, part the hair down the middle; secure one side of the hair up with an elastic band. Get a small section of hair from the top of the head and comb it. Divide this section of hair into three other sections; start a french braid from the crown, going down towards the temple.

Moving towards the back of the head, make the top of a heart. Once you work your way to the center at the back of the head, secure the braid tightly with another band. Repeat this same process on the other side of the head, securing it tightly in the end with another ponytail holder.

Once finished, join the two ends of each braid at the back with an elastic band, forming the bottom section of the heart.

10. Flower Braid Updo

We’ve done waterfall braids, heart braids, halo braids… now it’s time for the flower braid. This updo is suitable for elegant activities but cute enough for most occasions.

After detangling hair and removing any knots, part the hair into two sections. Use a little water to make it flat; pick up one section in the front and divide it into three new parts, creating a dutch braid. Continue braiding until you reach the corner of the eyebrow, then begin turning the braid.

Continue adding hair from both sides. Next, scoop the hair from the front of the face and braid it beginning from the top to the bottom.

Pull the remaining loose hair along the braid and make a regular braid, securing it with an elastic tie. Finally, roll all the hair up and twist it, attaching it with bobby pins.
